The Adelaide River Floodplains are less than an hour’s drive from Darwin. Around a quarter of this area is protected and managed as conservation reserves. The Floodplains have been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA).

The Darter is a slim water bird with a long, snake-like neck and a pointed, rather than hooked, bill. it Usually inhabits freshwater wetlands.

The Black-necked Stork was commonly known as the Jabiru, but the name has been officially changed.

Many people are unaware of this change, especially as the bird has a blue–rather than black–head, particularly in sunlight.

There are large breeding colonies containing 30,000 mixed waterbirds; likely to be the largest regularly-used egret colony in Australia.
